プレスフォトとは、劇場公開前に雑誌や新聞などのメディアへ配布された宣伝用写真のことです。
本編のカメラマンとは別にスチール(静止画)専門の写真家が撮影を担当し、
映画製作の現場や印象的なシーンを記録しました。
一作品につき複数の写真が制作され、未公開シーンや貴重なオフショットが含まれる場合もあります。
俳優や監督の宣材写真、撮影風景、舞台裏の一瞬など、バリエーションはさまざま。
これらをもとに映画雑誌が特集を組み、観客に作品を紹介しました。
まさに映画の「第一印象」を形作った重要な素材といえます。

Press photos are promotional photographs distributed to magazines and newspapers prior to a film’s release.
Multiple sets were often produced for a single film,
sometimes including unpublished scenes or rare behind-the-scenes shots.
These images ranged from actor and director portraits to candid production moments,
and were widely used by film magazines to introduce upcoming titles.
In many ways, they formed the very first public impression of a movie.
Press photos were also produced in the music industry, accompanying new album releases to capture the spirit and energy of the artists.
